Death ornamental

Death ornamentalThese two illustrations are by the Austrian Art Nouveau painter Carl Otto Czeschka (1878-1960) and belonged to the book "Die Nibelungen. Interpreted by Franz Keim" (Wien and Leipzig 1909)

Death ornamentalAs in the illustration by Howard Pyle's approach to subjective interpretation of history can be observed. More refrain Czeschka naturalistic performances. His illustrations are primarily decorative ornaments. However, arms and costumes much more historical than history painting, which was supposed to be realistic. Above all, he made a sort of neo-Romanesque, like the medieval illuminated manuscripts. Really great art!
